Homeopathy is a gentle and holistic system of medicine, developed in Germany by Samuel Hahnemann during the 18th century. Homeopathy is based on the principle that like cures like which, in practice, translates to taking an infinitesimal small amount of a substance that cures the same symptoms it causes if it were taken in larger amount.
An example is coffee. Some people are very sensitive to its effects and can become overstimulated by it. They may experience a heightened state of mental alertness, have trouble sleeping and become unusually reactive to sounds and smells. When a person presents at a homeopathic clinic with symptoms of an over stimulated nervous system, inability to sleep, headache, irritability and other symptoms that coffee can produce in some people, then Coffea cruda may be chosen by the Homeopath to alleviate their condition.
Homeopathic remedies are made from mainly plants, animals and mineral sources and are prepared following strict homeopathic pharmaceutical guidelines. They can be given as a liquid or small lactose based tablets. The remedy may contain little or none of the original physical matter it was derived from but the energy of the original substance imprints itself on the lactose base of the tablet or liquid and causes a stimulating and healing effect on the body. So, in other words, the remedy acts on the vital force or energy of the patient and helps to raise this energy so the natural healing power of the body can take place.
A visit to the Homeopath
Homeopathy aims to treat the whole person, taking into account personality, lifestyle and hereditary factors and because all people are unique, the medicines are prescribed to treat each person individually. Because of this, an initial consultation can take an hour or more as you will be asked many questions regarding your full medical history, your sleep and eating patterns, lifestyle and some of your mental and emotional characteristics. You should bring any pharmaceutical medications you are currently taking to your initial consultation.
Before your appointment it is useful to think about all the issues that are affecting your health and to make some notes before the first consultation.
Are there any side effects?
Homeopathy is a low risk system of medicine and provided the remedies are prescribed by a registered Homeopath and according to Homeopathic principles, they do not cause any unwanted side effects, but healing can occur in different ways for each individual. For some people, an immediate healing is experienced, for others there can be a feeling of well being even though the symptoms initially remain. If you have any concerns or questions whilst taking the remedies, you should ring your Homeopathic Practitioner. All Homeopathic medicines must be used only as directed.
Taking the remedies
The small pillules or liquids are placed in the mouth and should be taken away from food or drink and not taken soon after using alcohol, coffee, cigarettes or brushing your teeth. The remedies need to be kept away from heat and substances which have a strong smell like perfumes.
A Homeopath is not qualified to diagnose disease or illnesses and Homeopathy does not replace medical treatment. Eliza will refer clients to a GP if she believes this is necessary. No promises of cure are given.
